A common problem with toilets is that sometimes they keep running after you flush. This is usually caused by a worn-out flapper valve in the tank. When the flapper valve does not close properly, water continues to leak into the toilet bowl, and water continues to fill the tank from the water supply line. That is the sound you hear. The flapper valve is easy to replace. First, you should remove it so you can take it to the hardware store to find a match. Turn off the water, then flush to empty the tank. Remove the flapper from the assembly, and buy one that matches it. When you are ready to install the new flap, take notice that the length of the new chain should be the same as the old one. After you have adjusted the float, you can turn the water back on to refill the tank. Flush a couple of times to make sure that it is working properly.
If your drain is clogged, one of the simplest way is to unclog it with a snake. Insert it into the drain until you feel some resistance. This is where the clog is. Slowly rotate the snake to catch the debris, then pull it back out. You should have a big clump of debris at the end of the snake. Dispose of that, then run water down the drain to clear the rest of it.
If your faucet is dripping, it could be the problem of an old washer that has cracked. This can easily be replaced. Turn the water off. Remove the handle of your faucet by unscrewing the screw on top. After you have taken off the handle from the stem, take out the packing nut under the handle. Un-thread the stem to remove it. If the stem is dirty, clean it. The washer is at the end of the stem. Take the washer out and take it to your hardware store to get the same size. Put in the new washer and replace your faucet assembly.
If the thermostat on your electric hot-water heater is not functioning correctly, you can replace it. Just make sure that the power is off. The thermostat is connected to the tank with a number of color-coded wires. Take a photo of those wires so that you can connect your new thermostat properly. You can find thorough instructions online on how to replace the thermostat. Take advantage of them.
You can save a lot of money from plumbing costs if you learn how to do simple fixes. Do your research and read up on the methods. The more you practice, the more confidence you will gain.
